Misfortunate Modern Mums: Burnout & Hair-Out??
She’s thinning out, and she doesn’t know why. Losing hair is normal, but not when it’s in big chunks. If you’re losing hair faster than ever before, stress might be the root cause.
I see this often. People, running on fumes, watching their hair abandon ship. And every single time the story is the same: your scalp cashed the cheque your body couldn’t pay; with stress induced hair loss.
Acupuncture and stress relief
When stress is sky-high, cortisol stays high. High cortisol pushes hair follicles into the shedding phase (telogeneffluvium) and keeps them there. Acupuncture helps by down-regulating the HPA axis—the body’s stress superhighway. In the ancient classics, the hair on the head was a direct reflection of the vitality of the kidney.
When the adrenals work overtime, the scalp really suffers.
A 2021 randomised trial in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(doi:10.1155/2021/5514828) followed women with stress-related hair loss.
After 12 weeks of acupuncture for hair loss:
● Cortisol dropped 31 %
● Daily hair fall reduced by 68 %
● Hair density improved significantly compared to sham acupuncture
In the clinic I watch it in real time: heart-rate variability climbs, shoulders drop, and (usually) three months later
the blood flow to the scalp is back to normal.
How hair loss gets diagnosed (so you know it’s fixable)
- GP bloods: thyroid, iron, ferritin, vitamin D, zinc
- Hair-pull test: If after a gentle tug— six or more hairs slide out, we’re looking at telogeneffluvium
- History: “When did the kids stop sleeping?” is usually question #3
- Derm referral only if it’s patchy (99 % of the mums I see don’t need it)
Most of the time the diagnosis is: “You’re not going mad, you’re just stressed to the eyeballs.”…and hair follicles.
