As the search for holistic approaches that address the woman as a whole and not just her symptoms increases, Acupuncture for menopause in Perth is something that women are actively seeking answers for.
What are the symptoms?
Sudden bouts of heat throughout a woman’s body, usually starting on the face, head & neck, then can spread throughout the entire body. It can be accompanied with sweating, from light sweat to being absolutely drenched, making it very difficult to hide the fact that one is having a hot flush. Alongside this her face & skin may go red & she may have a sensation of anxiety. These can often happen at night, to the degree of waking up drenched & needing to change pyjamas & bedding or in heightened states of demand such as when rushing around, running late, whilst public speaking or during work presentations.
When do we notice these symptoms start?
Usually a woman approaches menopause from around 45 years of age onwards. Her menstrual cycles start to become erratic, either coming sooner than usual, or longer, skip a month, become much heavier or lighter than her usual period. When a woman notices these changes alongside hot flushes & sweats she’ll often go to her Dr & report as such. Blood hormone tests are usually only needed if the age of the woman is a lot less than 45. A Dr will do other tests to rule out other illnesses, such as low Iron or Thyroid issues. Even throughout perimenopause, with irregular cycles, a woman can still get pregnant, so precautions should be put in place if you are not wanting to get pregnant. If you would like to work with a GP focused on the menopausal transition, we recommend Hera Menopause Clinic in Mount Lawley.
Understanding the menopause transition
Perimenopause & Menopause come about as a woman’s hormones start to change as she gets older. With declining levels of Oestrogen, the part of the brain that controls the body’s thermoregulation, the body’s ability to regulate how hot or cold you feel, becomes impaired, making the body more sensitive to minor temperature fluctuations.
In Chinese Medicine Oestrogen is a “cooling” hormone & of Yin Nature, & Progesterone is a Heating hormone & of a Yang Nature. When you chart the temperature of a woman throughout her menstrual cycle, to track her ovulation; the temperature starts off lower in the first phase, when oestrogen is higher & her temperature increases when the progesterone rises approaching ovulation.
Using different acupuncture points we can help the way a body determines how hot or cold it feels. So by balancing out hormones; the sensitivity of the body to temperature changes.
How else can Acupuncture support Menopausal symptoms?
We can also reduce the anxiety & mood changes, the disturbed sleep, vaginal (and systemic) dryness that also come hand in hand with Menopausal/Perimenopausal hot flushes. Often Chinese Herbal Medicine is used alongside Acupuncture, to provide a more comprehensive treatment.
