As a mum juggling endless responsibilities, chronic fatigue symptoms can feel overwhelming and debilitating. Acupuncture may assist in supporting stressed mums with Chronic Fatigue Symptoms, helping them managing these challenges & helping you on your journey towards feeling more energised.
What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue is often linked to a condition called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). 1% of Australians annually, however we suspect the true number is much higher for those who are missed through the system of diagnostics.
Common symptoms include:
● Extreme tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest
● Muscle or joint pains
● Headaches
● Disturbed sleep
● Difficulty concentrating or “brain fog”
● Sore throat or swollen lymph nodes
These can significantly impact daily life, especially for busy mums who are trying to live at their best.
What Is the Cause of Chronic Fatigue and How Is It Diagnosed?
The exact cause of chronic fatigue remains unclear, but potential factors include viral infections, immune system issues, hormonal imbalances, or prolonged stress. In the patients I see, chronic stress is by far the most common contributor. Ongoing stress depletes essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins—nutrients critical for energy production, muscle recovery, and nervous system balance. Without adequate replenishment, the body struggles to sustain energy, leaving you feeling drained despite rest.
Diagnosis involves a healthcare professional ruling out other conditions through medical history, physical exams, and tests like blood work. There’s no single test for CFS/ME – it’s based on persistent symptoms lasting at least six months (or four months in children).
Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue Symptoms
For supporting stressed mums with chronic fatigue symptoms, acupuncture may assist with reducing tiredness, lowering the stress response and improving overall well being. This traditional practice involves gentle needle insertion at specific points to ‘turn on’ the body’s internal healing mechanisms. In doing so, Acupuncture supports the body to recover
Research supports this approach:
● A 2019 meta-analysis of 13 randomised trials found acupuncture significantly reduced fatigue
severity in CFS patients compared to sham treatment, with participants reporting meaningful
improvements in energy and daily function. 1
● A 2022 network meta-analysis of 51 studies ranked acupuncture among the most ef ective
non-drug options for improving CFS response rates and fatigue scores, with minimal side
effects. 2
● Acupuncture has also been shown to reduce anxiety—a key driver of stress-related fatigue—with consistent benefits across clinical trials. 3
Many of my patients find acupuncture helps on their journey with managing fatigue, promoting relaxation, deeper sleep, and a sense of renewal. Always consult your doctor to see if it’s suitable for you, alongside conventional care.
